Black Dog Meets Black Bear

THERE WE WERE…

…earlier this week, walking up an outdoor stairway with six flights of steps which we traverse nearly everyday. The passage allows pedestrian access from one street to another avenue uphill.

Jonah stopped between the fourth and fifth sets of stairs as he is trained to do. I said, “Jonah, Forward.” He did not move.”

Through the hazy fog of my compromised vision, it appeared that a large dog was just ahead of us. Jonah was not moving. It then was apparent that the dog was really a bear!

The black bear was about 20 feet from us. Jonah and I waited. The black bear looked at us and decided to leave us alone by walking away up the stairs.

I have wondered at times how Jonah would react should we encounter a bear. In this “black black dog meets black bear” episode Jonah was confident and resilient. He was a good boy.

  1. Holy smokes! Good for Jonah!

We just spent ten days in Haida Gwaii. We’re still amazed.

  2. The black bears are not as aggressive as the brown bears. And I think this bear was fairly young. Thanks for you concern.

  3. OMD, OMB! Black bears have been cited in our general area, and I do not want to meet one face to face! So glad nothing bad happened. Good boy, Jonah!

  4. Thank you so much. Yea, it was all rather amazing. The beer seemed bothered by us and just wanted to leave…. Which Jonah and I supported.

  5. Oh, John, he IS a good boy!

I’m cc-ing this to Megan and Allison, as their dog is a good boy, too, though he has yet to meet a bear on a flight of stairs….

    Love,
