Last month, we celebrated Owen’s first birthday. This month, our family commemorated Jonah’s fifth birthday. A question has occurred to me, to wit: Are dogs aware about their birthdays?

Of course, we humans are aware these canine birthdays. We bought Owen two new toys. Of course, he prefers the toy which I thought he would least enjoy. But then, I’m not a dog.
By contrast, Jonah’s birthday was subdued. He and I walked downtown. I watch floatplanes land and take off while he got to lay in the sunshine. His favorite part was the extra kibble while he relaxed under the bench.
Of course, Wyatt has seen many birthdays come and go. He will be eleven later this year. One might ask, did he know when the other dogs had their birthdays? Was he jealous of Owen’s toys and Jonah’s day in the sunshine?
Well said. Thank you.

My dogs have no problem stealing toys from each other at any time (unless Riley’s head is laying on it). And their birthdays are just days that they have no idea why all this cool stuff is happening, but enjoy it. Yes, I think the celebration is more for us, and for the joy they bring into our lives.

Most likely not but they still appreciate the extra attention and treats.I suspect it’s merely an artificial construct by humans but what the hay, works for me (and for any celebrating pup). 🐶
