A Home Visit From The Certified Guide Dog Mobility Instructor

THERE WE WERE…

…it was time yesterday for our visit from the Certified Guide Don MobIlity Instructor (CGDMI). It is routine for the agency Guide Dogs For The Blind (GDB) to visit clients. The idea is to provide support, advice, and assessment for client teams.

I welcomed to chance have such review. My handling skills can always be improved. These instructors are knowledgeable and thoughtful folks. Still, I was anxious about the visitor.

Jonah, by contrast, was seemingly not nervous at all. He was spending the morning as he often does, namely napping.

Jonah and me

The instructor from GDB spent over two hours with us. We answered survey questions. He followed along behind us as we walked some of our normal routes outside. We discussed dog handling issues and techniques.

As it turned out… all went well. The instructor was helpful and kind. The questions were simple. The time watching Jonah and me work together went fine. His comments were of grand assistance.

In the end… we were told that we are doing really well as a handler and guide dog team. We passed with high marks. I was grateful. Jonah was solid…and looking for a snack
