Thomas Paine as quoted:

“The mind once enlightened cannot again become dark.”
― Thomas PaineA Letter Addressed to the Abbe Raynal on the Affairs of North America

“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it NOW, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. ”
― Thomas Paine, The American Crisis

“Independence is my happiness, and I view things as they are, without regard to place or person; my country is the world, and my religion is to do good.”
― Thomas Paine, Rights of Man

“Whatever is my right as a man is also the right of another; and it becomes my duty to guarantee as well as to possess.”
― Thomas Paine, Rights of Man

“To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead.”
― Thomas Paine, An American Crisis

“But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.”
― Thomas Paine, Rights of Man

Where knowledge is a duty, ignorance is a crime. ~~ Thomas Paine, Virginia Papers

Poetry, Romance, and Lord Byron (1788.01.22)

Byron.GaWy2_650x360

LORD BYRON ON CROSSCURRENTS, 1/22:  The most flamboyant and notorious British poet of the Romantic Movement who gained notoriety by his scandalous private life and brilliant use of the English language, Lord Byron was born on this date in 1788.  The romance of Lord Byron’s poetry has inspired a show of love and triumph through “doo wop” music to which you are invite on Crosscurrents, 1/22 at 8 am.  ( radio link: http://www.krnn.org )

As Lord Byron is quoted as saying:

Friendship is Love without his wings!
Fools are my theme, let satire be my song.
And, after all, what is a lie? ‘Tis but
 The truth in masquerade.
Deep Vengeance is the daughter of deep Silence.
here is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar; I love not Man the less, but Nature more.
Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine.
Adversity is the first path to truth.
There is no instinct like that of the heart.
The best prophet of the future is the past.
To have joy, one must share it.
Hatred is the madness of the heart.
There is something pagan in me that I cannot shake off. In short, I deny nothing, but doubt everything.
If I don’t write to empty my mind, I go mad.
I am not now
That which I have been.
This is the age of oddities let loose.
The English winter – ending in July to recommence in August
There is pleasure in the pathless woods.

Rats On Planes

Rat boards flight at California airport, forces cancellation

Associated Press •       OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Alaska Airlines is calling in an exterminator after the company says a rat boarded one of its planes at Oakland International Airport in California and forced it to cancel the flight.  The airline says passengers were boarding the Portland, Oregon-bound flight Tuesday when the rat jumped from the jet way onto the plane.

Passengers already on board came off, and the plane was taken out of service. Most of the 110 passengers scheduled to take the flight were rebooked on a later flight to Portland.  Alaska Airlines says it will resume using the plane when a professional exterminator certifies it is rodent-free. The aircraft will also be inspected for any damage.

Gavin:  This boarding process has become a real “rat race”.

Wyatt:  It seems that “rodent class” has been added to first and business class.

Gavin:  I suppose they get “cheese” instead of pretzels.

Wyatt:  The passenger seats are truly getting smaller.

Gavin:  Let’s hope the airline doesn’t start allowing “squirrels” on planes.
